Peru – A beautiful country in South America.
One side of Peru is the Pacific Ocean. Peru is an ancient country, once inhabited by the Incan Empire. Peru is the 20th largest country in the world. Here one can find the famous Andes Mountain range. Peru is divided into three very diverse geographic regions.
The first of these three regions is the jungle region. It is a mostly flat terrain nearest to Brazil. Part of the Amazon Rainforest is found in Peru. The second region is the coastal region. It is mostly flat land with several valleys. These valleys are formed by rivers which come and go with the seasons. The third region is the Highlands, otherwise known as Sierra. The Andes are themselves the highlands. There are several canyons and plateaus in the highlands.
The times to visit Peru vary. These times would depend on where you would want to go. The best time to go to Peru to visit the Andes or any part of the highlands is during July to August. This is the dry season in the highlands If one would visit during the wet or rainy season, trekking and climbing in the mountains would be much more difficult. If one would want to visit the coastal area, the best time would be December through March. In the forest, it usually rains a lot so it doesn't matter when you visit the rainforest.
Peru is full of tourist attractions. One of the world's oldest civilizations dwelled here. Thus Peru is very rich in culture and tradition. One of the most famous areas in Peru is Machu Picchu. This is often called the Lost City of the Incas. It was probably constructed around 1450. This was the time when the ancient Incas were at their peak. It is called the Lost City of the Incas because the Spanish invaders never discovered it despite being so close to Cusco. A historian by the name Hiram Bingham found the site in the early 1900 and brought many artifacts with him as he returned home.
Peru is also home to the world's deepest canyon, the Colca. The world's highest navigable lake is also in Peru. It is named Titicaca Lake. We can also find the famous Nazca Lines in Peru. These ancient lines date back to 200 BC and 600 AD. There are around 300 figures clearly visible from the air. From the ground they look just like canals which were dug up. Some are animal or floral figures while others are random geometric figures.
